Supporting People at Risk of Suicide – VIRTUAL

Did you miss it? Watch the recording HERE.

Here are some additional resources mentioned during the presentation:

Join Emmalie Langan, Training Coordinator for Samaritans of Merrimack Valley, for a presentation on suicide prevention.

Samaritans is a suicide prevention and postvention (after a suicide death) center serving the northeast area of MA since 1980 and a program of Family Services of the Merrimack Valley, which is a social service agency with over 20 different programs serving the Merrimack Valley.

With over 135 suicide deaths per day in the US, it is important to be able to recognize when a friend or family member may be struggling with thoughts of suicide. Knowing when to ask, “Are you thinking about taking your life?” is an important first step in helping someone. This presentation will help provide participants with the information necessary to possibly save a life.

After this presentation, audience members will be able to:

  • Understand the prevalence of suicide in the US
  • Dispel the myths around suicide
  • Recognize the risk factors and warnings signs of possible suicide risk as well as protective factors
  • Be able to openly and nonjudgmentally talk with someone who may be at risk
  • Better understand what risk level a person may be at (non-clinically)
  • Have the resources available to get help for the person

There will be time to ask questions at the end of this presentation.

Emmalie has been the Samaritans training coordinator for over 4 years and has facilitated various programs, including Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), Youth Mental Health First Aid as well as trainings focused on working aged people and elders. She comes to Samaritans with experience as a peer counselor for LBGTQIA+ young adults and working in youth and homeless services.

This program is sponsored by the Memorial Hall Library in Andover and is in collaboration with a multitude of MA and NH libraries.

SciFi/Fantasy Book Recs with Kristen of the Fantasy Cafe – VIRTUAL

Registration is required. This is a virtual program that will take place on Zoom. Registrants will receive an email with the Zoom link. If you don’t see it, check your spam folder (the email will be coming from Zoom).

Love Speculative Fiction, SciFi, and Fantasy but not sure what to read next? Join blogger Kristen of Fantasy Cafe for this quarterly session of her recommendations of some of the best of SciFi/Fantasy books out there! We’re sure you’ll find something to like from Kristen’s many enthusiastic reviews.

Kristen has been an avid reader for as long as she can remember and has been blogging about fantasy and science fiction books since 2007. Though she enjoys a variety of speculative fiction subgenres, she has a special fondness for dark stories, complicated characters, and books that incorporate myths and history, and she shares about the books she reads/wants to read on her website, fantasybookcafe.com. In addition to hosting her reviews and other book coverage, her website has celebrated Women in SF&F Month every April since 2012, an event that has featured more than 200 guest posts by women in SFF over the years. She lives in Vermont with her husband and several (yet somehow never enough) bookshelves. You can also find Kristen on Bluesky as @fantasycafe, where she likes to chat about books and Baldur’s Gate 3.

We’ll send out a list of all recommendations for those who register.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library and is in collaboration with a multitude of MA and NH libraries.

This workshop will help make that desire a reality. It has been very successful in helping people to write extensively about their life experiences, whether for family members or to someday publish a book.
